Learning Disabilities

A disorder in 1 or more of the basic psychological processes involved in understanding or in using language, spoken or written. The disorder manifest itself in an inperfect ability to listen, think, speak, read, write, spell, or do mathmatical calculations. (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, 2004)

Individuals with learning disabilities often display:

• difficulties with word recognition
• omitted, substitute or reverse words while reading orally
• limited comprehension of what they have read
• difficulties in handwriting, spelling, productivity, text structure, sentence structure, word usage, and composition
• procedural problems-frequent errors in understanding math concepts
• semantic memory problems-remembering math facts
• visual-spacial problems-difficulty reproducing numerals
• poor short-term, long-term, and working memory
• difficulties focusing attention, staying organized, and solving problems
• social difficulties
